Jennifer, Sandy & Maria

Some easy pickings at YouTube this morning, with this week’s posts providing a shopping list.

Jennifer Warnes’ show-business career got its first boost in 1967 when she was joined the cast of TV’s The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Today’s first video shows her singing “Easy To Be Hard” from the musical Hair. According to a note at the Bestsong website, her version of the song was the first to chart in the U.S and was included on her first album, See Me, Feel Me, Touch Me, Heal Me! This clip is a performance of “Easy To Be Hard” on the Smothers Brothers’ show.

Then I found what appears to be a clip of Sandy Denny recording a demo of “Late November,” a song that appeared on her 1971 album, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens. (There are a few wobbles in the sound, but it’s still – to me, anyway – a fascinating clip.)*

Finally, there’s a nice 1974 clip of Maria Muldaur performing “Midnight At The Oasis” on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert. (Others on the show that night were the James Gang and Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band.) I can’t post the video, but you can see it here.

*I recall a reader leaving a note to the effect that rather than being a demo, the Sandy Denny video was part of a British television program, which makes sense. Note added June 28, 2011.
